Research workshop (iron, diet and lifestyle) 18 Nov 2025

A research workshop with focus on iron, diet and lifestyle, was held at Home Hotel Uman in Umeå on Tuesday 18 November.

The workshop research group consisted of a mix of pediatricians, neonatologists, nutritionist, clinical chemists, lab specialist and psychologist as well as two PhD students, a post doc and a medical student. The workshop participants also included four visiting researchers from southern Sweden.

The multidisciplinary approach brought many advantages and helped promote useful feedback and discussions.

There were presentations in the morning, which included:

  • Post doc Iraxte presented both a project on screen time and developmental progress in toddlers as well as a study blood transfusions in neonates
  • PhD student Ludwig presented the SIDBI (Supplementing Iron and Development in Breastfed Infants) study – a randomized, controlled trial of iron supplementation in breastfed infants
  • PhD student Petter presented his ongoing project on a vegan diet in young children
  • Researcher and clinical biochemist Marie visiting from Lund University presented ‘Iron, transferrin and transferrin saturation – from foetal development to infancy’
  • Inger-Cecilia, from the Department of Life Sciences/Food and Nutrition Science and Chalmers University in Gothenburg presented on ‘Ferritin in the NICE cohort and EAT Lancet diet for risk groups’

This was followed by further discussions and group sessions after lunch.

This was our most well-attended workshop so far on the topic, and this time the focus was mostly on iron, where our group are at the frontline of international researchsaid Magnus Domellöf who hosted this specific workshop for the sixth time.
